Cuban ballet and contemporary dance techniques hold a remarkable place in the world of dance, having cultivated some of the most exceptional dancers globally. Influenced by the historical context of Russia’s impact on Cuba during the revolution, Fidel Castro had a passion for dance and art therefore helping Alfonso, the visionary behind the National Cuban Ballet School, this resulted in the establishment of an esteemed ballet institution. This partnership helped shape the distinctiveness of Cuban ballet. The inception of the Cuban ballet method traces back to the 1930s when Fernando Alonso drew inspiration from various renowned ballet schools across Europe. Through meticulous study of methods including the Cecchetti method (Italian), the Bournonville (Denmark), the Vaganova method (Russian), the Royal Academy of Dance method (British) Alonso ingeniously crafted his own methodology that emphasized both technical prowess and expressive artistry. A distinctive trait of the Cuban method lies in its ability to seamlessly blend classical techniques with an added touch of vibrant Cuban spirit, making it stand out on the international stage. Notably, the male roles in Cuban ballet exude a remarkably masculine energy, mirroring the bold and passionate Cuban personality. This fusion of technical excellence, artistic ingenuity, and cultural vibrancy has played a pivotal role in shaping some of the world’s finest dancers, cementing the Cuban influence in the global dance landscape.
Within the framework of the Cuban method, there is a heightened emphasis on communication between dance partners, resulting in an elevation of ballet to a realm of heightened expression and dramatic impact. The synchronization and cohesion between the couple are attained through an authentic connection that extends through the gaze, the entirety of the facial expression, as well as the fluidity of the arms and hands. Every facet of the Cuban method, encompassing the physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions, amalgamates harmoniously to give rise to a ballet style that stands unparalleled in its uniqueness.
